Opened in 1882 The Waitaki Museum ( former Oamaru Athenaeum & Mechanics Institute ) was designed by renowned architect Thomas Forrester. Subsequent buildings have been incorporated at the rear of the building along with a stairwell. Internally these buildings are connected and form a unique facility with a connected series of spaces.
Stage-2 alterations include exterior maintenance and window repair, a lift for accessibility and ease of display mobility, extensive interior alterations to the first floor, new archive reception and offices, upgraded storage facility, new HVAC and passive fire upgrades throughout.
